Traveling Players - A Place for Young Artists to Grow!

When selecting a summer program for your child, who they are surrounded by is just as important as what the program offers.  Meet some of our current Traveling Players!

Meet James – 11th grade, Actor

A lifelong singer and musical theatre lover, James performed in his school’s musicals in the ensemble.  He joined Traveling Players after 8th grade, having never read or performed any Shakespeare. Four years later, James is a leader within our community – a regular face on our stages during the summer as well as the school year.

For the past two summers he has taken the stage as part of our pre-college Shakespeare Troupe.

“When I came to Traveling Players, I never thought I would get the chance to be a part of something life-changing. Traveling Players has given me not only a family, but a place to grow, a place to learn, and most importantly, a place to make mistakes. I hope that I can keep growing and keep having great experiences, and keep loving what I do because of Traveling Players Ensemble.” – James

James received a 2023 Best Actor in a Leading Role Cappies (regional theatre award) for his performance as Captain Keller in The Miracle Worker.

Meet Rebecca & Jason –  8th & 6th grade, Actors

Rebecca and Jason are siblings who travel to Virginia to spend their full summers at Traveling Players!

Energetic and a little wacky, Jason followed his sister to camp as a 4th grader in the Greek Mythology Ensemble, where he took the stage battling monsters in world premiere plays commissioned specifically for our youngest actors.  He returned last summer for his first time in the Thespian Ensemble.

Rebecca first came to Traveling Players as a 6th grader in the Thespian Ensemble where her love for literature and open-hearted humor made her a natural leader onstage and off.  She’s a true Shakespeare lover and regular competitor in the Pittsburgh Public Theater Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest.

“This year I chose a piece from Hamlet.  Using the skills and techniques I learned at camp... I was able to grab a 30/30 score for both rounds, and two first-place spots. I am beyond grateful to Traveling Players and all of your guidance.” – Rebecca

Last summer, Rebecca was one of only two 8th graders to be accepted into our Shakespeare Ensemble.

Meet Nicole – 12th grade, Technical Theatre

Nicole was a Technical Theatre Apprentice for 5 years, gaining skills and confidence in her abilities each year.  She earns her community service hours by volunteering on our school year productions, where she has added running the soundboard to her list of scenic design and construction skills.

While most of our apprentices work exclusively underneath our professional designers, her talent and dedication landed her the opportunity to design our productions of Heracles, Alice in Wonderland, and Romeo & Juliet.

Nicole was accepted into several top scenic design programs: NYU TischRutgersDePaul University.

Meet Sammy – 4th grade, Actor

Sammy joined Traveling Players for the first time two summers ago in Acting Studio Day Camp.  They came for 2 weeks that first summer, then continued by taking theatre classes year-round in our Studio.

“I like Traveling Players camp. I mean, I LOVE Traveling Players. The teachers are so kind. They explain everything so patiently. And they make it fun (most important part!!).” - Sammy

Sammy joined us last summer for their first sleepaway experience in the Mythology Ensemble!
