Arachne

ARACHNE
by Judith Walsh White

Arachne is an extraordinary weaver. She takes great pride in her work, so much so that she begins boasting of how no other could rival her skill, not even Athena, goddess of Wisdom & patron of Weaving, who had herself blessed Arachne with the skill she now boasts about. The hubris enrages Athena, who then challenges Arachne to a tapestry competition. Arachne weaves into her tapestry stories of the gods and their follies, particularly Zeus. Athena knows the work is better than her own - embarrassed by the defeat and maddened by the stories Arachne has depicted, she turns Arachne into a spider, the first ever. Now, Arachne and her descendants will weave their webs forever.

Servant of Two Masters

SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS
by Carlo Goldoni

In the joyous, comedic romp, The Servant of Two Masters, a young woman named Beatrice disguises herself as her dead brother, so she can collect the dowry owed to her family by Pantalone— all while pining for her lover, Florindo (who defeated her brother in a duel!). She brings her ever-so-hungry servant, Truffaldino, along with her, who ends up being roped into serving another master. The play follows Truffaldino’s exploits around Venice as he gets more and more confused about which master needs what letter or bag of money. Oh! And Florindo is searching for Beatrice. Oh! And Truffaldino falls in love with another servant, Smeraldina. Pleasantly highlighting many of the archetypes found in Commedia dell’arte, The Servant of Two Masters is an ensemble-driven show with some show-stopping moments of comedic wonder.

Love's Labor's Lost

LOVE'S LABOR'S LOST
In Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, Love’s Labor’s Lost, a quartet of four bachelors swear off women for three years in pursuit of knowledge and wisdom. Enter four young bachelorettes from France. Shakespeare, famous for his side plots, concocts a farcical love plot between a Spaniard, a clown, and a dairymaid. A little-known comedy that is thought of as Shakespeare’s richest in terms of textual wordplay and linguistic flavor— this would be a wonderful introduction to the bard and a treasure trove for those looking to find the poetic devices Shakespeare is best known for.

Cymbeline

CYMBELINE
Shakespeare’s Cymbeline is believed to be one of his final plays and is categorized as a romance due to its unconventional and experimental blend of genres and forms. In the play, Cymbeline is the King of Britain and has three children. Two sons were taken from him in their infancy, and his remaining daughter, Innogen, betrayed him by marrying a commoner known as Posthumus Leonatus. Banished, Posthumus makes a shady deal with a “friend,” Iachimo, who goes to court and tries to woo Innogen. Terrified, Innogen disguises as a boy and runs to the forest in an arduous journey to find her beloved Posthumus. And that’s only a sliver of this epic tale that scholars will argue is Shakespeare’s closest to grounded fantasy. In the forest and beyond lay evil queens, nasty stepbrothers, visits from Gods, trusty servants, and an oncoming war. Ensemble-driven, movement-based, and rich with moral quandaries, Cymbeline is a wonderful push into the grand world of Shakespearean performance.
